Candy From Strangers
July 02, 2014
Marketing in a world going anonymous.
The growing number of impositions companies are making on people’s privacy and online detail, is slowly seeping into mainstream conversation. Every time Facebook or Instagram changes the way they handle people’s data or make a misstep, it chips away at our online openness.
UPDATE: This event has now been and gone. Check out the recap here: http://theroyals.com.au/2014/08/a-recap-of-our-flux-sydney-candy-from-strangers-event/
The revelations about the NSA overreaching in their snooping had social networking companies racing to declare their own exclusion from the programs. Online and social advertising particularly relies heavily on access to personal data to drive relevance and effectiveness. And a medium term view, where anonymisers and ad-blocking take off, puts pressure on marketers to deliver value outside traditional ad formats (“native advertising” anyone?)
Will we find ourselves marketing to a consumer’s silhouette, a version of themselves that they allow us to see? Do people on the ‘dark net’ buy things too?
Is privacy a right or an illusion?
